Together, We’re Warmer

The Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM) opens ENKKL’s large-scale group exhibition “Together, We’re Warmer” on 15 November 2025. The exhibition was produced through a collective method: ENKKL members formed multiple groups, each developing a new co-authored work for EKKM’s different floors. One of these groups was us - BLOOD SISTERS (Kärt Heinvere, Kärt Koppel, Raahel Rüütel, and Johanna Reinvald).

Installation title: “Tactical spooning”
Authors: BLOOD SISTERS (Kärt Koppel, Johanna Reinvald, Raahel Rüütel, Kärt Heinvere)
Date: 15. November – 14. December 2025
Description: In recent years, the geopolitical and social climate in Estonia has brought the themes of sheltering and constant readiness for yet another crisis to the forefront. Public shelters have appeared in urban areas, guidelines for assembling emergency supplies are being circulated, and in Lasnamäe, a model shelter stands open for guided tours.

In conversation with a teacher living in Lviv, whose everyday life is accompanied by the constant sound of air raid alarms, we have heard real accounts of seeking shelter. Not everyone manages to reach a designated shelter in time, and many must seek protection in their own homes or in the buildings where they happen to be at the time of the attack. The safest room is one without windows, where no shards of glass can cause injuries. Even better if the room has double walls.

The title and conceptual context of the installation originate from the military world. The term tactical spooning refers to a technique used by soldiers sleeping side by side in order to survive cold conditions. In times of crisis, physical closeness, which is usually associated with intimacy and emotional connection, becomes a pragmatic means of survival.

We play with a fictive sense of physical intimacy, where the listener finds themselves in an equally vulnerable position, searching for warmth and shelter.
