exhibition KOLKAPLIKA!

Me and Diandra Rebase participated in the exhibition KOLKAPLIKA!, curated by Liina Pääsuke.

Our sculpture, titled “Does it really belong here?”, emerged from our conversations and explores themes of darkness, loneliness, belonging, the influence of horror films, and the experience of social exclusion. In reflecting on our upbringing in smaller communities, we repeatedly encountered the idea that fostering a sense of belonging often requires concealing one’s inner mystical self.

One reference that encapsulates our thoughts is August Kitzberg’s story about Tiina, which addresses common themes of societal alienation and disdain through the lens of Estonian mythology. The narrative follows a young woman ostracized by her village for being perceived as a werewolf-a blend of human and wolf. It explores the essence of humanity, social exclusion, and the complex relationship between nature and humanity, ultimately serving as a cautionary reflection on how fear of the unknown can distort reality and allow the mystique of darkness to overshadow one’s thoughts and actions.

Is this a memory of dark forests, where fears and shadows create mystical figures peering at you from between the trees
Is it the fear of loneliness that compels us to hide our inner creatures from the villagers?
Or is it a feeling of incomprehension that overwhelms us, fostering doubt about whether our work truly belongs here?
